Dear Williamsburg Academy of Colorado Parents,

I hope your family enjoyed a restful fall break and that your students are feeling recharged and ready to finish the semester strong! The past few weeks have been full of energy and connection across our Williamsburg Academy of Colorado (WAC) community, both online and in-person.

Our first-ever Teen Leadership Retreat, fully funded by WAC and hosted by Learning Brave with our amazing Leadership Mentor Ross Gilbert, was a tremendous success! Ross shared, “WAC kids are amazing! It’s beautiful to see them connecting and being brave. The mentors and adventure staff are so dedicated to these kids.”

We’ve also loved connecting with families at our recent pumpkin decorating and games event in Grand Junction, as well as our pizza, arcade, and laser tag event in Denver, especially the unforgettable adults vs. students laser tag battle! Moments like these remind me how special our community is.

I also recently met with our Student Body Leadership Team to discuss our school goals for the year. Students immediately jumped in with ideas for how to share these goals and bring them to life across the school. Their creativity, insight, and leadership continue to inspire me every day.

We’re so grateful for our students and families; you truly make WAC the vibrant, connected community it is.

October MTSS Newsletter: With midterms behind us, now’s the perfect time for students to refocus for the rest of the semester. Parents can help by encouraging their students to reestablish consistent routines and take advantage of support systems like our study labs. Check out this month’s newsletter for success tips and study lab details to help your student finish strong this fall!

Announcements

Discord Access Removed on Student Chromebooks: To help maintain a safe, focused, and productive learning environment, access to Discord has been removed from student Chromebooks. While Discord can be useful website for communication, it is primarily designed for social and gaming purposes, which can create distractions during the school day. Additionally, the platform has been linked to safety concerns for students. Limiting access on school devices allows us to better support our students and keep them safe while learning.

Pomodoro Labs Attendance Winners: We’re excited to announce the winners of this quarter’s Pomodoro Lab attendance drawing in the WAC Hub! Every student who joined a session was entered, with bonus entries for each additional day of participation. The lucky winners each received a $20 gift card to a restaurant of their choice in recognition of their commitment and focus through October 15.

Thank you to everyone who joined! Our study labs are a great way to stay engaged and build strong study habits. Congratulations to our winners—keep up the great work!

Adams State University Virtual Open House: Join the Adams State University team on October 29 at 6:00 PM MT or November 1 at 10:00 AM MT for a virtual open house. This event is a great opportunity to:

Midterm exams are next week, and we want your students to feel confident and prepared. Midterms give students the chance to reflect on what they’ve learned so far and to demonstrate their growth. With your support at home, they can approach these exams with focus and balance.

Here are a few ways you can help your student prepare:

• Plan Ahead: Review their exam schedule together and set aside dedicated study time.
• Review Actively: Encourage them to use notes, work through practice problems, or explain the material to you—teaching back is a powerful way to learn.
• Stay Balanced: Remind them to get plenty of rest, eat well, and take short breaks during study sessions to keep their energy up.
• Connect with Mentors: If your student feels unsure about a concept, their mentors are here to help. Reaching out with questions is an important part of the learning process.
• Thank you for partnering with us to support your student’s success. We’re excited to see the growth they bring to midterms and beyond!

Please encourage them to participate—these surveys offer a valuable opportunity to provide feedback on their Live and Self-Paced courses and mentors, helping us improve classes.

Mid-Semester Assignment Deadlines: Midterms are next week! Students in both Live and Self-Paced classes must submit all assignments from the first half of the semester by October 15 at 5:00 PM MT. After this deadline, midterm assignments will lock, and late submissions will not be accepted.

Dear Williamsburg Academy of Colorado Parents,

As the mornings grow cooler, the days shorter, and the fall rains arrive, I’ve been reflecting on how this season mirrors our school year. We’ve settled into routines, the initial excitement has worn off, and the real work of growth is underway. Just as fall prepares the way for spring, the effort we put in now will shape our students’ success later in the year.

This year, our school goals focus on a few key areas:

1. Using Data to Support Students: We aim to leverage insights from assessments and assignments to guide instruction, provide support, and celebrate progress. Mentors and I are currently reviewing beginning-of-year benchmark assessment results and CMAS data to better understand student growth and achievement, and to identify where adjustments in instruction or school decisions can best support every learner.
2. Supporting our Mentors and Staff: Our weekly Professional Development meetings help us continue learning and growing as educators so we can bring our best to students each day.
3. Strengthening Student Engagement and Attendance: We are closely monitoring class attendance and assignment submissions, reaching out early when students need additional support.

I’m excited about these goals because they are practical, meaningful, and directly support student growth. As we move deeper into the fall season, I encourage everyone—students, mentors, and families alike—to lean into the rhythm of consistent effort. It’s the small, daily actions that make the biggest difference in the long run.

Student Course Evaluation Surveys: Student Course Evaluation Surveys are now live in your student’s Homeroom Canvas course. Your student’s feedback helps us improve our curriculum, mentoring, and our courses each year. Please remind your student to complete the survey for each of their Self-Paced and Live courses by Monday, October 6. Surveys will remain open through Friday, October 10.

Hosted in partnership with Learning Brave, a youth touring company, this retreat combines outdoor adventure, leadership growth, and meaningful connections for high school students. October 6-10 is Williamsburg Spirit Week! Encourage your student to join the fun by dressing up each day and showing their school spirit!

Monday – Zoom Background: Choose a creative virtual background to show off.

Wednesday – Fancy Day: Break out your best formal wear and dress to impress.

Thursday – Dress up as a Mentor: Outfits, accessories, and mannerisms included!

Each year, we set school-wide goals to guide our growth and ensure we are serving students and families in the best way possible. At Williamsburg Academy of Colorado (WAC), our mission is to prepare promising students for meaningful lives as principled leaders, and our goals reflect that mission. They also align with one of our company’s core values: growth—not just for students, but for mentors, staff, and our school community.

This year, we are focusing on three goals:

That’s why we are monitoring attendance and engagement closely, reaching out early when support is needed, and partnering with families to keep learning on track.

Concurrent Enrollment Opportunities at WAC: Did you know your student can earn college credit in high school—at little to no cost? Through Concurrent Enrollment (CE), WAC students can take college-level courses that count toward both high school and college graduation requirements. Dear Williamsburg Academy of Colorado Parents,

We are just two weeks away from our first in-person student and family gathering, and I couldn’t be more excited!

When my kids were in middle and high school, we would travel to Williamsburg events as often as we could. At the time, I thought of it mostly as giving them chances to connect in person, but looking back, I can see those trips meant so much more. The friendships they made at those gatherings are still strong today, even now that they’re in college. Being together in person helped those relationships grow beyond the screen and gave my kids a sense of community I’ll always be grateful for.

That’s why I look forward to our in-person events every year. They aren’t just about activities or schedules—they’re about connection, leadership, and belonging. These gatherings remind us that even though our school is online, our community is very real. I can’t wait to see many of you at our upcoming events and watch your students build memories and friendships of their own.

Dear Williamsburg Academy of Colorado Parents,

As we wrap up the fourth week of the school year, it’s normal for students to start feeling a little worn down. The excitement of a new year begins to settle, routines take hold, and the workload can sometimes feel overwhelming. This is exactly when one of the most important success traits comes into play: grit.

Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, defines grit as “passion and perseverance for very long-term goals.” She reminds us that “our potential is one thing. What we do with it is quite another.” In other words, success is not about talent alone—it’s about staying the course, pushing through challenges, and choosing to keep moving forward even when it’s difficult.

And I’ll be honest, I experience this in my own role. There are moments when the work feels heavy, the challenges stack up, and it would be easy to lose momentum. But, just like our students, I’m learning that leaning into grit—taking one step at a time while keeping the bigger picture in sight—makes all the difference.

At WAC, our mission is to prepare promising students for meaningful lives as principled leaders. Part of leadership is learning to work through energy lulls, remain committed, and trust that small daily efforts add up to significant progress over time. This week, I encourage you to remind your students that setbacks and low-energy moments are normal, but persevering through them builds grit—and grit opens doors to growth, confidence, and long-term success.

This week, I’m excited to share one of the most impactful opportunities we offer Williamsburg Academy of Colorado (WAC) high school students—our Fall Teen Leadership Retreat hosted by Learning Brave. At Williamsburg, our mission is to prepare promising students for meaningful lives as principled leaders, and this retreat is a powerful way for them to live that mission.

Through in-person connection, students will practice our Elevated Ethics—building others up, serving, going first, and showing respect—while developing leadership skills and forming friendships and memories that last a lifetime. Dear WAC Parents,

We’re so happy to have your students with us this year—it’s been a wonderful start to the semester! As we wrap up Week Two, I wanted to share a quick reflection:

With Labor Day ahead, I’m reminded of the importance of recognizing the value of hard work and perseverance, as well as the need to pause and recharge. At Williamsburg Academy of Colorado, our mission is to prepare promising students for meaningful lives as principled leaders. Part of leadership is learning when to lean into hard work and when to step back, reflect, and restore energy.

Safe2Tell Student Ambassador Opportunity: Safe2Tell Colorado—a statewide program that empowers students to be leaders in creating safe, supportive school communities—is now accepting applications for its Student Ambassador Program. This opportunity is open to current sophomores, juniors, and seniors who want to grow as leaders while promoting empathy, compassion, mental health awareness, and school safety.

The application window is open August 27-September 24. Encourage your student to learn more and apply through the Student Ambassador Application page.

Tutoring & Study Support: If your student needs help with math or language arts, has questions about another course, or would benefit from extra support, they can join our drop-in tutoring sessions offered every weekday:

Monday through Thursday - 1:30-3:30 PM MT

Friday - 9:00-11:00 AM MT

No sign-up is required. Students can access the sessions directly through the link in the WAC Hub.

Our classes are officially underway, and we’re so excited to begin another school year with you!

At Williamsburg Academy of Colorado (WAC), our mission is to prepare promising students for meaningful lives as principled leaders. We do this by helping students take ownership of their learning, strengthen their character, and step into leadership opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

To help every student succeed, we follow our Rules of Engagement, which are showing up to class, participating respectfully, supporting others, and completing assignments with integrity. These are grounded in our Williamsburg Elevated Ethics:

Dear WAC Parents,

The 2025–26 school year is officially underway! We’re excited to see new and returning faces in our Zoom rooms and look forward to joining your student on their educational journey.

As Mentors and support staff, our greatest desire is to support you in educating your students. Our mentors are licensed, well-trained, highly qualified, and they genuinely care. We focus on teaching students how to think, not just what to think, and know that working with you leads to the best outcomes.

We ask for your help in setting your student up for success this year. Research shows that students are more successful when parents are actively involved in their education. Below are four focus areas that can greatly boost your student’s success:

FOCUS #1: Help Students Create a Quiet Area for Class and Homework

A quiet, distraction-free area helps students focus during class and while completing homework in Canvas. Each live class is only 50 minutes long, so a dedicated space allows them to be fully present and get the most out of their learning time.

FOCUS #2: Encourage Note-Taking

Note-taking improves learning, concentration, and memory. Active note-taking during class and while reading deepens understanding and helps students recall material for out-of-class assignments. Encourage note-taking to become a habit by providing adequate notebooks and offering praise during your weekly check-ins with your student.

FOCUS #3: Establish a Regular Reading Routine

Our educational model centers on interactive classes, engaging discussions, meaningful projects, and the original works of history’s greatest thinkers—making reading essential. While not all students love to read, what they read forms the foundation for learning. Students are best prepared when they read in advance and take their own notes on the material. Spreading reading throughout the week, rather than cramming into long sessions, improves engagement and preparation.

FOCUS #4: Implement the 3-Step Parent Support Plan

We have seen great success from parents who implement the 3-Step Parent Support Plan with their student. Following this plan can positively impact your student’s learning and often turns parents into co-mentors in the process. When parents, mentors, and support staff work together, we can better ensure student success.

Securly Reports for Parents: WAC is introducing Securly, a system that sends parents summaries of their student’s school computer use and flags any concerning activity. These reports help you stay informed and support your student’s online safety. If you receive a concerning report, our counselors have prepared a guide with the next steps and tips for supporting your student.

Tutoring & Study Support: Starting this Monday, August 18, all WAC students are invited to attend any drop-in Math and Language Arts Tutoring sessions, available every weekday afternoon. Students are also welcome to attend weekly “Burger” Catch-Up Days on Friday mornings. More details and Zoom links will be available soon in the WAC Hub.

Welcome to a brand-new school year at Williamsburg Academy of Colorado! I’m so excited to welcome our new and returning families as we launch another amazing year together.

Our mission at WAC is to prepare students for meaningful lives as principled leaders. That starts by helping them take ownership of their own learning and supporting you in helping them do just that.

To start strong, please make sure your student completes their Orientation coursework in Canvas. These assignments are designed to help them understand WAC’s culture, learning expectations, and weekly rhythms.

Shifting to online learning can be a steep learning curve, but our caring staff and mentors are here to support you and your student every step of the way. If you need to connect with a staff member anytime this school year, please visit our Contact Us web page.

We also know how important parent involvement is to student success. That’s why we created helpful videos on our Three-Step Parent Support Plan to help you support your student in their learning. You can find those videos on our Parent Resource Center web page, along with a Parent Video Library full of short how-to videos and other helpful resources.

It’s a great way to get oriented, hear from WAC team members, and feel confident heading into the school year.
