Dear WAC Parents,

I’m excited to share a quick update on our students’ growth this year! As part of our ongoing commitment to student learning, we introduced the Renaissance STAR internal benchmark assessment, replacing the NWEA MAP assessment. This new tool helps us track student progress more effectively, especially in Math and Language Arts.

Between our beginning-of-year (BOY) and middle-of-year (MOY) benchmarks, WAC students across all grade levels have shown meaningful growth—ranging from 1% to as much as 13%! This progress is a testament to your student’s effort, our transformational curriculum, and the strong support from mentors and families like you.

Our end-of-year (EOY) assessment is just around the corner, and we’re excited to see how students have continued to grow throughout the year. Thank you for your continued support in helping your student thrive at Williamsburg Academy of Colorado (WAC)!

As I write this message, I can hear the wind rustling outside my window—a familiar sound this time of year! These spring winds remind me that change is in the air, bringing renewal, energy, and fresh growth. It’s a natural season of transformation—and the perfect time for students to reflect, refocus, and take purposeful steps forward.

Leadership is a thread that runs through everything we do at Williamsburg Academy of Colorado (WAC). It’s often about making meaningful choices, especially when things feel unpredictable or challenging. Just as the wind slowly shapes the landscape, consistent acts of effort, commitment, and kindness shape our students into confident, principled leaders.

Dear WAC Parents,

I’m currently in the middle of one of my favorite responsibilities of the year: Annual mentor reviews.  This means I have the privilege of observing each of our incredible Williamsburg Academy of Colorado (WAC) mentors in action and meeting with them one-on-one afterward. At WAC, growth is a core value—no matter your role. Seeking and receiving feedback is not only welcomed, it's embraced as part of our commitment to excellence.

It’s truly inspiring to watch our mentors work with your students. They share subject matter in ways that help students see themselves—and the world—differently. We call these moments Transformational Learning Experiences, or “TLEs”. Our mentors strive to create TLEs in every class and are always refining their teaching and curriculum to support your students in meaningful, lasting ways.

If you feel inspired, I encourage you to take a moment this week to send a quick note to one or two of your student’s mentors. A kind word of appreciation goes a long way—your encouragement reminds them that their efforts are not only seen but are truly making a difference.

Next week, state testing begins for those who have opted in, offering students a chance to demonstrate their learning and progress. State Testing (CMAS and PSAT/SAT) Reminder: State Testing runs from April 7–25, and we look forward to seeing many of our students and families at the testing sites! April Exceptional Student Newsletter: April is here, bringing new opportunities for growth and success as we approach the end of the school year! With spring in full bloom, now is the perfect time to set goals and stay motivated. This month’s Exceptional Student Newsletter features Pomodoro Study Sessions, tips for maintaining mental well-being, and strategies for keeping a positive mindset during this busy season. Pomodoro Labs Attendance Winners: We’re excited to announce the winners of our Pomodoro lab attendance drawing in the WAC Hub! Each of the five students selected has earned a $20 restaurant gift card for attending at least 75% of Pomodoro Labs this quarter through March 6. Bonus entries were awarded to those who stayed caught up in classes and attended five consecutive late-add labs.

Midterm exams are coming up next week, and we know this can be a busy time for students. Thoughtful preparation can help them feel confident and ready to succeed! Here are a few ways you can support your student during this important week:

Encourage a study plan – Help your student break their studying into manageable chunks over several days instead of cramming the night before.

Create a focused environment – A quiet, distraction-free space can improve concentration and information retention.

Prioritize rest and wellness – Regular breaks, healthy snacks, and plenty of sleep will keep their mind sharp.

Check in with mentors – If your student has questions or needs guidance, remind them to connect with their mentors—they’re here to help!

Mid-Semester Assignment Deadlines: Midterms are next week! Students need to submit all assignments from the first half of the semester by the following dates:

Live Classes: March 11 by 9:00 PM MT

Self-Paced Courses: March 14 by 5:00 PM MT

After these dates and times, assignments due before midterms will lock, and late submissions will no longer be possible.

Please note that if your student fails their self-paced classes, they may not be able to take self-paced courses in the future.

Live Class Offerings for 2025-26: As you know, registration is open at Williamsburg Academy of Colorado! Check out the Williamsburg Course Schedule sheet to explore available live classes for the upcoming school year.

LAU & Williamsburg Prom: Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) is excited to welcome Williamsburg high school students (grades 9–12) and their guests to the Great Gatsby Prom on May 2, 2025, from 8:00–11:00 PM MT at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. I’m thrilled to share some exciting news—Williamsburg Academy of Colorado is expanding its Concurrent Enrollment offerings through a new partnership with Arapahoe Community College (ACC)! This adds to our existing partnerships with Pueblo Community College, Front Range Community College, and Pikes Peak Community College, giving students even more opportunities to get a head start on their college education.

Concurrent Enrollment allows eligible high school students to take college courses while still in high school, earning both high school and college credit tuition-free. It’s a fantastic way for students to explore college-level coursework, gain real-world experience, and work toward a degree, certification, or career preparation.

If your student is interested, I encourage you to contact your student’s school counselor to discuss eligibility and find the best fit for their goals. We’re excited to see our students take advantage of these incredible opportunities!

Dear WAC Parents,

One of my favorite books, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, teaches the principle "Begin with the End in Mind." This habit reminds us that success isn’t just about what we do today—it’s about keeping our bigger goals in sight and making choices that align with where we want to be.

I know firsthand how challenging that can be. I’m currently working toward a certification that has taken nearly a year to complete, with a deadline in April. At times, it feels overwhelming, but keeping the end in mind helps me break it down into weekly and daily goals that keep me on track. The same applies to our students—every small step, every assignment, and every challenge they push through brings them closer to their goals.

Encourage your student to reflect on the end they’re working toward. Whether it’s mastering a subject, building leadership skills, or developing stronger habits, their daily choices—when made with the end in mind—will shape their success. Let’s help them stay focused, take intentional action, and remember that perseverance today leads to achievement tomorrow.

Happy February! As we settle into the semester, I want to take a moment to recognize the dedication and hard work I’ve seen from our students and families. The winter months can feel long, but they are also a time when perseverance, strong leadership habits, and small daily wins make the most impact. Please continue encouraging your student to show up, keep learning, and stay focused—consistency is key to developing great leaders.

If your student is feeling behind or has questions about their coursework, I encourage them to reach out to their mentor. Our mentors are here to support students not only academically but also in their personal growth. Whether it’s staying on track in a course, setting goals, or finding motivation, they’re ready to assist.

As we move forward, remember that growth doesn’t always come in big leaps—sometimes steady progress is what matters most. New World Language Courses: Exciting news! Starting next school year, we will offer new live World Language courses: Spanish 1, French 1, and Japanese 1 & 2. Learning a new language not only enhances communication skills, but also fosters cultural understanding and opens doors to diverse opportunities. Registration opens on February 18—be sure to sign up for these new courses.

WAC Open Meeting: WAC will hold its quarterly Open Meeting this Tuesday, February 11, at 2:30 PM MT via Zoom. All parents, mentors, and community members are welcome to attend. STAR Progress Check Results Available Now: If your student completed STAR testing in January, their updated score is now available on their Renaissance dashboard. If they didn’t test in January, their August score will still be displayed. Follow these steps to access their results:

1. Go to the Renaissance Welcome Portal, select “I’m a Student," and enter our school Renaissance ID (rp-83ca) if prompted.
2. Enter the same username and password your student used to complete their progress check. Login help is available in this document under the “Instructions” section.
3. On the Renaissance dashboard, scroll down to the Parents and Guardians section and select "Get Email Updates".
4. Click on "Progress" in the top right corner. The Star Unified Scores will be at the bottom of this page. You can find how to understand these scores and their implications in this document.

Spring Testing Form Deadline: If you haven’t already, please complete our State Testing Form. This form lets us know whether your student will opt in or out of in-person CMAS, PSAT, and SAT testing in April and their preferred testing location.

The State of Colorado requires all students to either participate in testing or formally opt out, and WAC must report each student’s decision to stay in compliance with state guidelines.

Please submit the form by Wednesday, February 5. If it isn’t submitted by the deadline, student computers will be locked. Please contact our IT Support and Assessment Team if you have any questions. We appreciate your prompt attention to this important matter!

Parent Mentor Conferences: Parent Mentor Conferences begin Monday, February 3, and go until Friday, February 7. An email was sent earlier this week with instructions on how to sign up. Be sure to check your inbox for more details. If you missed the email, please contact our Customer Support Team.

WAC Course Add/Drop Deadline: The deadline to drop or change courses for the winter semester is Monday, January 20. When planning your student’s schedule, please note: middle school students must enroll in at least four courses, and high school students must enroll in at least six unless they are part of our Homeschool Enrichment Program. If you have any questions, please contact our counseling team.

Winter Semester Senior Meetings Reminder: All seniors must meet with their academic counselor once each semester. Winter semester meetings are now underway and must be completed by Friday, January 31, 2025. Our counseling team has sent out reminders to all graduating seniors and their parents, so please check your email and schedule your student’s meeting. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our counseling team.

LAU & Williamsburg Winter Formal: Williamsburg students and their guests are invited to Leadership Academy of Utah’s (LAU) Winter Formal at the beautiful Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City, UT, on Saturday, February 22 from 7:00 to 9:30 PM MT. WAC high school students are invited to visit the Boulder campus, learn about law school, discover diverse legal career paths, and envision themselves in this impactful profession. Finals week is just around the corner! I wanted to share a couple of tips to help your students start next week strong and approach their exams with effective study habits!

1. Get Enough Sleep - Sleep plays a crucial role in helping the brain process, sort, and recall information. Pulling all-nighters can actually harm your student’s ability to remember key details when it matters most.
2. Study in Groups - Encourage your student to connect with their peers or even take the initiative to start a study group. These groups can boost motivation and serve as an excellent accountability tool during challenging times.
3. Take Breaks - While it often feels like there’s not enough time to finish final assignments and prepare for exams, remind your student to create a schedule that includes breaks—even short ones. Intentional breaks help the brain process and organize information while boosting energy and focus.
4. Reach Out to Mentors - Remember, mentors are here to support your student throughout the semester—especially as it wraps up. Encourage your student to reach out for help whenever they need it!

Impact Aid Program Survey: Our district, Education reEnvisioned, may qualify for federal Impact Aid, which helps schools recover funds lost to reduced property tax revenue. If your student has a parent or guardian who lives or works on federal property or is an active military member, your family may be eligible for this program. To check eligibility, please review this informative letter. If eligible, please complete a separate Impact Aid survey form for each student and send it to our Director of Student and Parent Services.

Annual CHOICE Humanitarian Fundraiser: Each year, our Humanities 7 students study the challenges of poverty in Latin America. Rather than feeling discouraged, they’re stepping up to make a difference! This year, partnering with CHOICE Humanitarian, our students are aiming to raise $7,000 to bring clean water to rural Bolivian communities. CogAT Student Gifts: Thank you to all 6th-grade students who completed the recent CogAT assessment. Keep an eye out for your special WAC prize, which will be arriving in the mail soon!

Weekly Student Progress Email Update: Starting next week, parents will receive our Weekly Student Progress email twice a week—on both Wednesday and Saturday. This email includes updates on your student’s grades, class logins, and course pacing. This change means you’ll have a closer, more frequent look at your student’s progress, giving you more opportunities to give them timely support when needed.

WAC Open Meeting: WAC will hold an Open Meeting for all interested parents, mentors, and the public this Tuesday, November 12, at 2:30 PM MT via Zoom. This public forum is an opportunity to stay informed, ask questions, and provide feedback on the current school year. For more details, visit our Public Meetings web page.

WAC Student Support Opportunities: Is your student looking for extra academic support? We have several great options available for all WAC students below. Zoom links for each event are accessible to your student in the WAC Hub under Student Success.

The Pomodoro Study Lab offers structured study sessions for students needing focused study time. Available Monday through Thursday, the lab provides two daily options: 1:00 to 2:30 PM MT and 2:30 to 4:00 PM MT. During each session, students set a 25-minute study goal, work toward it, check in to share their progress, then set their next 25-minute goal, and so on.

Drop-in Math and Language Arts Tutoring is available Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 4:30 PM MT. This is a great option for students needing targeted help with course-specific assignments.

“Burger" Catch-Up Day gives students dedicated time to work on assignments every Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM MT. This weekly session offers a supportive, collaborative environment where students can make progress on their work alongside their peers.

Beginning-of-Year Progress Check (STAR Testing) Results Available Now: If your student completed the Beginning-of-Year Progress Check in Math and/or Language Arts, you can now view their results on the Renaissance dashboard. Here’s how to access them:

1. Go to the Renaissance Welcome Portal and select “I’m a Student.”
2. Enter the same username and password your student used to complete their progress check. Login help is available here under the “Instructions” section.
3. On the Renaissance dashboard, scroll to the Parents and Guardians section and select "Get Email Updates."
4. Click on "Progress" in the top right corner. The Star Unified Scores will be at the bottom of this page. You can find how to understand these scores and their implications in this document.

CogAT Assessment Information for 6th Graders: Attention parents of 6th grade students! The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is coming up. Here are some important details to note:

• The testing window for WAC is October 28-November 1. Please check your inbox for details about your student’s session, emailed on October 21.
• Students will be excused from their regular classes during their testing day and session time.
• Testing sessions will be held via Zoom. Your session Zoom link will be sent via text and email on October 24-25.
• Each student will receive a special WAC prize sent to their home upon completing the assessment.

If you have any questions or need to reschedule your student’s testing session, please contact the Special Services team.

We’re excited to introduce Concurrent Enrollment (CE), a fantastic opportunity for your high school student to earn both high school and college credits through one of our three approved community colleges: Pikes Peak State College, Pueblo Community College, and Front Range Community College.

CE provides a more challenging academic experience that prepares students for the demands of college and other post-graduate paths. Additionally, CE credits give students a head start on earning a college degree, and we cover the cost of tuition (fees, books, and supplies are not included).

If you're interested in enrolling your student in a CE course or want to learn more about them, please visit our Concurrent Enrollment web page. If one of our CE partners seems like a great fit for your student, please contact a school counselor. They'll talk you through what needs to happen to be ready for classes come January.

Dear WAC Families,

I would like to take a moment to clarify the communication you’ve received this week about the Star "Beginning of the Year Assessment" and your student’s computer locking.

At Williamsburg Academy of Colorado, we use a tool called Star in Math and Language Arts to assess student growth. Students take a Star test at the beginning, middle, and end of the year so we can see their development as they learn. Think of it as a way we double-check student growth.

Once these assessments are completed, our Math and Language Arts Mentors use this data to identify concepts students might need help understanding and provide further support during class and office hours. Our Student Support Team also uses this data to determine what further help a student might need.

Just so you know, these assessments are internal and are not state-mandated. There is no opt-out option because they are simply part of our Math and Language Arts curriculum. However, please let me know if you have concerns about your child taking this assessment. I am happy to discuss this further.

The beginning of the year assessment will close today, September 20. Like all other assignments in the course, completing the assessment does affect student grades. However, computers will not be locked if students don't complete the assessment. I apologize for this incorrect communication.

Thursday Night Activities: Our first online event of the year, Thursday Night Live, is on August 22 from 3:00-4:00 PM MT. Going forward, Thursday activities will alternate between Thursday Night Live and Inspiration Hour each week. The Zoom link for these activities can be found on the front page of your student’s Homeroom Canvas course. Please encourage your student to participate in these activities to engage fully with the Williamsburg community!

Back-to-School Bash Event Series Updates: WAC is hosting a series of Back-to-School events to kick off the new school year. Details about each event were included in last week's weekly parent update. However, we have made a few changes to the events since then.

Please be aware of the following changes:

• This event has been postponed. We will provide rescheduling details soon.

WAC Books, Supplies, and Computers: We're working diligently to process orders for books and computers. Here are a few things to watch for:

• If you haven't already, you will receive an email from 'no-reply@williamsburglearning.com' once your student's WAC email address is created (they need this to sign into their school computer).
• When your student's books and computer have shipped, you will receive an email from the same 'no-reply' address above. Please check your inbox, specifically your spam folder, for these instructions.
• If your student is waiting for a school computer, please arrange for them to use a home computer or a local library to access classes until their computer arrives.
• For any questions or concerns, please email books.computers@wacolorado.org.

WAC Open Meeting: The public, Parent Advisory Council (PAC) members, and students are invited to attend our quarterly WAC Open Meetings. The first meeting of the school year will be held on Tuesday, August 20 at 2:30 PM MT via Zoom. These meetings are a chance to discuss school goals and progress, and we welcome public comments and questions. If you wish to share a question or an issue at the Open Meeting, please contact the Executive Director, Heidi Mitchell, at least 24 hours in advance. We look forward to your participation!

Dear Williamsburg Academy of Colorado Families,

Final classes, assignments, and exams are all happening next week. The WAC team and our mentors are cheering your student on to the finish line! 

I also wanted to make a special mention of our graduating seniors. These students have worked hard to reach the doorstep of their high school graduation. It has taken a lot of diligence and effort to be where they are now. I want to acknowledge that and congratulate them — well done, Seniors! 

It continues to be our pleasure to be a part of your student’s educational journey. We look forward to seeing you again next year! To those who may be taking another path, we wish you all the best and thank you for letting us be a part of your lives. Have a wonderful summer in beautiful Colorado!

End-of-Year Computer Returns: All laptops must be returned this year for maintenance and servicing. Please watch your email for a return label and instructions. We will be sending out devices for all students registered for Fall 2024 classes in July. All returning laptops must be shipped by May 31, 2024. WAC Graduation: The WAC graduation will be held via Zoom on Friday, May 24, at 6:00 PM MT. The Zoom link for this exciting event will be available in Homeroom early next week. Congratulations to this year’s outstanding graduating class!

Final Assignment Submission Deadline: As we are coming up on the end of the semester, students must submit all of their assignments by the following dates: 

• Live Classes: All assignments are due on May 21 by 9:00 PM MT
• Self-Paced Courses: All assignments are due on May 24 by 5:00 PM MT

After these specific dates and times, assignments will lock, and submissions will not be possible. Please visit with your student and help them make a plan to complete their assignments on time.

WAC Credit Recovery: During the summer, WAC provides self-paced credit recovery courses across core subjects and electives. Course availability varies and is subject to change. Please schedule a meeting with our academic counselor here to discuss your child’s credit needs.

LAU & WL Lagoon Day: Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) and Williamsburg Learning (WL) invites WAC to celebrate the end of a great school year at Lagoon Amusement Park on May 22, from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM MT in Farmington, UT. Attendees who have registered by May 21 will receive a promo code to purchase tickets at our discounted group rate via email. There is no participant cap, so invite your family and friends! Dear Williamsburg Academy of Colorado Families,

It was a joy to be in Colorado Springs last Friday evening for our Spring Celebration event! Visiting and having fun with you all was a treat. Several families traveled long distances to be there, recognizing that coming together in person is both meaningful and powerful. Doing so helps foster relationships and perpetuates WAC’s Culture of Belonging. Consequently, we are excited to offer other exciting events next year! Be sure to watch for a survey that will ask for activity ideas and preferences on our upcoming school calendar.

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, deadlines, assignments, and final exams can create a lot of stress. Please encourage your student to reach out to their mentors if they have questions or concerns about their concluding assignments or grades. We are here to support them and help them finish the semester strong. We value our WAC students and families!

Learning Brave Teen Retreat and Tours: WAC’s Leadership mentor, Ross Gilbert, and his wife Skyler, host teen-focused tours all around the world! This year, Ross and Skyler are hosting Teen Retreats in Utah (June 3-7), Austria and Germany (July 22-30), and Italy (October 11-19). These events function as wonderful opportunities for Williamsburg students to connect with the outdoors and celebrate their hard work together.
