Middle School Course Selection Guidelines
- To be considered full-time, middle school students must enroll in at least 4 courses (2 of them being core). Middle school students may take up to 6 classes per semester.
- 6/7 STEM courses operate on a rotating two-year curriculum in which students complete the A/B courses one year and the C/D courses the next.
- Humanities courses are available in Classic and Honors versions. Students in both versions meet together in the same live class sessions but Honors students complete roughly 30% more work. Students have 28 calendar days from the first day of the semester to move from one version to another.
- If you’re concerned your child may be overwhelmed by taking one of the above suggested course paths, we recommend not enrolling them in any electives.
- If your 8th-grader is advanced, you may get permission from an academic counselor to enroll your child in a 9th-grade math and/or writing course. Middle school students who take high school math may receive high school math credit.
- Our Second Language courses are designed for students in grades 9-12 and offered for high school credit. If your middle school student is interested and you feel they can successfully complete a self-paced, high school-level language course, please email support@williamsburglearning.com.
- Students may choose from live online, self-paced, and/or independent courses. Independent Studies courses are upon approval as they must meet state requirements. Please contact a school counselor if you have any questions.
- Most middle school core courses are offered exclusively in our live-online format. Math 6, 7, and 8, as well as some Electives, are available in the “self-paced” format.
- When possible, we recommend taking live-online courses over self-paced courses for the best academic experience and results. Self-paced courses should be selected only when needed.
- We suggest registering for both the fall and winter semesters simultaneously to ensure you get the best schedule for your child. If needed, you can adjust your child’s courses and schedule within the first 28 days of each semester.

A Few Notes on Graduation Requirements
Because students come to Williamsburg from a variety of backgrounds and educational experiences including homeschool, private, charter, and public schools, we suggest working with our Academic Counselor to transfer credits (if applicable) and create an individualized pathway to graduation.
Each course listed below earns 0.5 credits toward graduation unless otherwise noted. In most cases, we recommend students take “A” versions of a course in the fall semester and “B” versions in winter. -
Language Arts/English – 4.0 Credits
Complete the following:
- Writing & Rhetoric A & B (LA 9)
- American Lit A & B (LA 10)
- Political Lit (LA 11 - Fall semester)
- Short Stories (LA 11 - Winter semester)
- World Lit A & B (LA 12)
-
Mathematics – 3.0 Credits
Students must complete through Math 3 or Algebra 2 to graduate.
Complete the following:- HS Math 1 A & B, or Algebra 1A* and Geometry 1A*
- HS Math 2 A & B, or Algebra 1B* and Geometry 1B*
- HS Math 3 A & B, or Algebra 2*
- Pre-Calculus A & B (optional)
Students who complete pre-calculus (A & B courses) and another math class (both A & B courses) on this list only need 2 credits instead of 3. A student who has already completed Algebra 2 does not need to complete any other HS math courses.
Note: Pre-Algebra is equivalent to 7th Grade Math & Intro to HS Math, and is a non-credit course for high school.
*These courses are only offered in the self-paced format.
-
Science – 3.0 Credits
Complete 2.0 credits from the following foundational sciences:
- Earth Science A & B
- Biology A & B
- Chemistry A & B
- Physics A & B
- Plus 1.0 credit of additional foundational or another science course (such as Astronomy A & B)
Note: Many selective colleges want to see 1.0 credit each of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics on an applicant’s transcript.
-
Social Studies – 3.0 Credits
Complete the following:
- U.S. History A & B (fulfills state-required Genocide and Holocaust studies)
- Government & Economics A & B
- World Civilizations
- Geography & World Events
Note: We recommend World Civilizations and Geography & World Events be taken during 11th or 12th grade.
-
Physical Education/Health – 2.0 Credits
Complete the following:
- Mind & Body Stewardship (satisfies 0.5 Health credits)
- Fitness for Life* (satisfies 0.5 PE credits)
- Plus 1.0 credits of Independent PE. Independent PE may be taken multiple times to satisfy the requirement and earns 0.5 credits each time.
*Personal Leadership B includes Fitness for Life and can fulfill Health credit.
-
Additional Electives – 9.0 Credits
Students must complete 9.0 credits of Electives.
We recommend taking the following total credits per subject area:
- 2.0 Leadership
- 2.0 Foreign Language
- 1.0 Fine Arts
- 0.5 Technology (Personal Leadership A satisfies 0.5 Technology credit)
- 3.5 Any Electives
Note: The State of Colorado does not require foreign language for graduation. However, if your student is pursuing college, 2.0 credits in a single foreign language is recommended.
Excess credit in any subject area will be applied toward extra Electives credit. See the Electives Program on the Williamsburg Learning site for a full list of Elective courses offered. -
College & Career Readiness
In addition to earning the required credits, students must demonstrate College and Career Readiness by achieving minimum SAT scores (470 on reading, writing, and communication and 500 on math) or completing their Capstone Portfolio Project.
See the Colorado Department of Education website for information on the Capstone Project or contact our academic counselor.

What Are Williamsburg’s Registration Policies?
Parents Register for Students
At Williamsburg, parents complete the registration process for their students through our Student Information Services (SIS) system. Students are not permitted to register themselves.
First-Come, First-Serve
We currently let students register on a first-come-first-served basis (as long as they have applied and been accepted). We do not have an official waiting list or queue. We have a limited number of seats in all our courses. We do not reserve seats for returning students, but we always notify current families when registration opens for a new semester.
Classics/Honors Window of Change Policy
Students have until the drop deadline, which is 28 calendar days from the first day of the semester, to switch between the Honors and Classic versions of a course. After the 28-day deadline, students may contact their mentor to request a transfer exception, which must be approved by the mentor’s Program Leader.
To ensure that students receiving credit for an Honors course have completed all required Honors-level work, students who are approved to transfer from a Classic course to an Honors course after the 28-day deadline will have to make up the work that has fallen due since the 28-day deadline.
