At Williamsburg Family of Schools, we believe great online learning doesn't happen by accident. It happens through thoughtful instructional design, dedicated mentors, and technology that supports transformational learning.

That's why we regularly evaluate the tools and practices we use. Whether it's adopting a stronger math curriculum, refining our instructional methods, or transitioning to a new virtual classroom platform, every decision is guided by one question:

Live Classes Designed for Learning

Our live online classes are intentionally built around connection, discussion, and critical thinking. Rather than sitting through long lectures, students actively participate in conversations, collaborate with classmates, and engage with ideas in meaningful ways.

Each class follows a consistent structure that helps students know what to expect while creating opportunities for deeper learning.

A typical class includes:

• A connection question or activity that helps build classroom community
• A brief moment of silence to settle in and prepare to learn
• An engaging lesson hook that sparks curiosity
• An interactive lesson informed by real-time student understanding
• A clear wrap-up that reinforces key concepts and learning goals

This rhythm helps students stay engaged while creating a classroom environment where participation feels natural and expected.

Teaching Students How to Think, Not What to Think

One of the defining characteristics of a Williamsburg education is our use of the Socratic Method.

Instead of simply providing answers, our mentors ask thoughtful questions that encourage students to analyze ideas, defend their reasoning, and think critically. Students learn to ask questions, evaluate information, and engage respectfully with different perspectives.

Our goal isn't simply to help students memorize information. It's to help them become confident thinkers and lifelong learners. These are skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

The Mentors Behind Every Great Class

We all know the technology we use matters, but great learning starts with great teachers.

Williamsburg mentors receive specialized training for online instruction because teaching in a virtual classroom requires more than just sharing a screen.

Rather than delivering one-way presentations, mentors facilitate discussion, encourage participation, and create an environment where every student has opportunities to contribute. Throughout each class, they monitor student understanding and engagement, adjusting instruction in real time to provide additional support or challenge when needed.

Across every live class, mentors are guided by six core instructional practices:

• Modeling: Demonstrating curiosity, perseverance, respect, and a growth mindset.
• Connection: Building strong relationships and fostering a positive classroom community.
• Engaging Presentations: Using stories, visuals, discussion, and interactive activities to make learning memorable.
• Data-Driven Instruction: Using student learning data to personalize instruction and respond to individual needs.
• Quality Feedback: Providing timely, meaningful feedback that helps students continue growing.
• The Socratic Method: Encouraging thoughtful questions and helping students develop their own understanding.

Choosing the Best Learning Platforms for Students

As technology evolves, so do the opportunities to improve online learning.

For many years, our live classes were held on Zoom, an industry-standard platform for online learning. As we continued looking for ways to enhance the student experience, we transitioned to Engageli—a platform designed specifically for education.

This transition reflects the same thoughtful approach we've taken in other areas of our program. Last year, for example, we carefully piloted and adopted Derivita as our math platform after determining it would provide a stronger learning experience for students. We continually assess our tools and processes because we believe even good systems can become better.

Engageli allows us to create a richer classroom experience through features designed specifically for teaching and learning, including:

• Seamless transitions between whole-class instruction and small-group collaboration using interactive "tables."
• Built-in classroom tools that encourage discussion and participation.
• Real-time attendance and engagement insights that help mentors identify students who may need additional support.
• Enhanced security through Canvas integration, helping ensure students access only their own classes.
• Interactive recordings and built-in note-taking tools that make reviewing lessons easier.

Simply put, Engageli helps us do what we've always wanted to do: create online classrooms that feel more connected, collaborative, and engaging.

Technology That Works Well Together

Students access everything they need through Canvas, our central learning hub.

Canvas is where students find assignments, coursework, recordings, announcements, and links to live classes. When it's time for class, they simply launch Engageli directly from Canvas.

At the beginning of the school year, students complete an Engageli orientation to become familiar with the platform and its features. Since the experience may feel new at first, we encourage students to revisit the orientation video whenever they need a refresher.

Always Improving for Our Students

While some things evolve, many things remain the same.

Students will still learn from the same caring mentors, interact with the same classmates, and follow the same class schedules. They'll continue to be challenged academically while participating in thoughtful discussions and collaborative learning experiences.
