Our Approach to AI

How We’re Teaching Students to Use AI Responsibly

Preparing students for a world where AI is everywhere

As a parent, you want your child’s school to prepare them for the real world. AI is transforming that world quickly, and we want to help your student be ready for it. That is why we are taking a responsible, thoughtful, and proactive approach to teaching students about AI at the Williamsburg Family of Schools.

We know this may raise important questions about academic integrity, student learning, and what real work should look like in a world where technology can generate answers instantly. These are thoughtful concerns, and they are concerns we share. We are committed to being transparent about how we are integrating AI into our program.

Our Belief: AI Is Powerful, but Students Still Need to Learn How to Think

AI is one of the most transformative technologies in history. It cannot do everything for us, and it should not. For students, though, it offers a rare opportunity to begin building a technological skill that can benefit them for years to come.

One common concern is that AI can be used to outsource thinking. At Williamsburg, we see AI as a tool to enhance thinking, not replace it. We teach students to use it the same way. Our focus is not simply on allowing students to use AI. Our focus is on helping them develop the judgment and skills to use it well.

What We’re Teaching Students

Our goal is to help students become critical consumers and effective users of AI, rather than unprepared participants in a world where AI is everywhere.

Students are learning to:

  • Ask better questions and think critically
  • Evaluate accuracy and bias in AI-generated responses
  • Use AI ethically to support learning, not shortcut it

As an online program, one of our core promises is to help your student increase their tech-intentionality. We define this as building the discipline to use technology for learning, not distraction. We are applying that same approach to AI.

What AI Use Looks Like at Williamsburg

We encourage students to actively experiment with AI tools as part of their assignments. This gives them the hands-on experience needed to understand both the capabilities and the limitations of AI.

Rather than treating AI as something students should avoid at all costs, we treat it as something they should learn to navigate responsibly, with guidance, structure, and a clear focus on learning outcomes.

At Williamsburg, AI becomes a thought partner, not an answer machine. Students are encouraged to use it to explore ideas, clarify misunderstandings, brainstorm, and strengthen their work, while still doing the meaningful thinking themselves.

Our Mentors: Connection First, With Feedback Enhanced by AI

Our approach to mentoring is built on real relationships, personalized feedback, and high standards. That is not changing.

Going forward, our mentors will use AI to enhance, not replace, the grading process for student assignments. AI will help make feedback even more comprehensive and timely, while still preserving the personalized attention and in-depth expertise that make it so valuable.

How Our Assignments Are Evolving

Our assignments are also evolving to reflect the reality that AI is here to stay. That means upgrading our curriculum to focus even more on skills like critical and creative thinking, which AI cannot easily replicate.

As AI makes certain tasks easier, we are raising the bar on the skills that matter most. We are building learning experiences that help students develop:

  • Clear writing and communication skills
  • Deep reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Real understanding, not just checking boxes

We are also helping students learn how to use AI to refine their ideas and think even more deeply than they could without it.

Our Commitment to You and Your Student

We want to be proactive and clear. We are not ignoring AI, and we are not letting it steer our students off track. We are teaching students how to use it responsibly, thoughtfully, and in ways that strengthen their independence and confidence.

In a world where AI is becoming an everyday part of school and work, we believe one of the best gifts we can give students is the ability to use it well.

Thank you for trusting us with your student’s growth. We are excited about what is possible with AI, and we are committed to pursuing it the right way.
