Winter Parent Pre-Semester Checklist

Welcome, Winter 2017 Burger parents and students! We are excited to be on your educational team.  To ensure a smooth start to the fast-approaching Winter term, we need you to complete this checklist before the Winter semester begins on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.  Parents, we recommend you PRINT OUT and work through the checklist with your student(s) right away!

Students need to prepare for classes by gathering books and materials, as well as getting technology all set up.

At Williamsburg, we use a lot of online systems, and it’s critical that students work through any potential glitches in those systems before they start their coursework. The most common issues are students not having their computers set up right, not ordering books in time, having some kind of a technology glitch, or being unclear about Student and Parent Orientations.

Below you’ll find a Pre-Semester Checklist designed to help your family be ready to hit the ground running. If you get stuck on a task below, email us at support@williamsburglearning.com and ask for help. Below the checklist, you’ll see information about Student and Parent Orientation sessions, and some common questions and answers.

Complete?Task
Log into SIS: Work with your student to create a unique student SIS login (links were emailed to your student's email address when you registered). Remember that your student’s SIS login will also be used to sign in to Canvas to do all schoolwork.
Note Course Details: In SIS, note the section numbers and class times of each of your student’s classes, e.g., Humanities 8A, Section 03, T/Th 9am MT.
Purchase Books: Go to williamsburgacademy.org and scroll over “COURSES.” You will see links to the complete high school and middle school reading lists.
Tech Check: Go to Technology Requirements and Support and complete the following:

  • Read “Part 1: Technology Tools” together. Be sure you have a computer that will work, and the required software programs.

  • Read “Part 2: Technology Skills” together. Follow all of the steps. Contact support@williamsburglearning.com if you run into snags.
Log into Canvas: Students, log into Canvas and customize your course menu. Here’s a screencast that shows you how. By customizing your menu, you'll see all the courses for which you're registered, even if they are not yet published. Courses will be published by December 9th.
Parent Orientation: Every Fall, we hold live Parent Orientation sessions designed specifically for parents of students new to Williamsburg schools. Parents whose students join us midyear can watch the recordings of those fact-packed orientation sessions here: MS Recording; HS Recording.

For helpful announcements and information throughout the year, check out our Williamsburg Academy Parent Website.

Plan for Student Orientation: New students are asked to attend live orientation sessions on Tuesday, January 3, at 10am MT (see below for details). You are “new” to the middle and high school programs if you have never attended a Williamsburg school. All students will attend regular classes on Wednesday and Thursday. Please note that if you are a new student taking fewer than three courses during the Winter semester, you DO have orientation coursework to complete, but attending a live orientation session is completely optional.
Need help? If you get stuck on any of the tasks above or if you need to contact us, email support@williamsburglearning.com or call 800-200-6869 ext. 5. We promise we'll be patient and helpful, just like Middle Ages Tech Support.

Student Orientation

Please see the information below to learn more about your Student Orientation schedule. Remember that only new middle school students and new high school students need to attend live orientation sessions; note that for new students taking fewer than three classes, live orientation is encouraged, but optional.  Students are “new” to the middle and high school programs if they have never attended a Williamsburg school. (Students who attended the Williamsburg Middle School and are starting High School are considered “returning students” for orientation purposes.)

Frequently Asked Questions

When will courses display in Canvas?

Within 24 hours of registering for a course in SIS, you should be able to log into Canvas and see the course title under your “Courses” menu as long as you have customized your course list.  If you don’t see them, try clicking “customize” on the “Courses” menu and see if your courses are there, but not yet accessible. Here’s a screencast that shows you how. If they are not showing one day after registering, email support@williamsburglearning.com and explain. Course content will be available when we publish the courses on December 9th.

When will courses actually open in Canvas?

We will publish winter courses no later than Friday, December 9th.  Before this date, you will be able to see the courses for which you are enrolled in Canvas under “Courses,” but you will not be able to access the course syllabus or content or do any coursework until we publish the courses.

When will normal classes begin?

Classes will meet at regular times starting on Wednesday, January 4th.
