Weekly Parent Email – March 4, 2022

March 4, 2022

Our incredible Student Body Leadership presidency recently sent a survey to their fellow students asking how well we’re doing as a school with our core value of Culture of Belonging. The results were powerfully and professionally delivered to Williamsburg’s leaders and mentors during a recent professional development meeting.

Much of the feedback was highly positive, like this response:

Middle school is supposed to be some of the worst years of a person’s life, but I had a blast! My attitude towards learning, life, health, friendships, and work have all changed since then, and Williamsburg Academy and its wonderful mentors have played essential roles in this growth. My leadership classes, in particular, have helped me learn what the elements of an inclusive, emotionally open environment are and have helped me replicate it in other parts of my social circle. I’m so grateful for this school and the way it has and continues to shape my future as a principled leader!”

We also heard from students who have felt bullied or excluded:

“A lot of it has been silent isolation that I’ve faced and witnessed. Most won’t insult you directly, but they will find other ways to say how they feel about you, even if it has to be in private and outside school settings or in subtler, passive-aggressive ways that dehumanize and insult people to the same degree that being openly cruel would do. It feels isolating.”

We are so grateful for this feedback. It helps us find new ways we can improve our school culture. Special thanks to Sabrina Allen, Brandon Johnson, and Maya Lai for presenting to the faculty! You are truly Principled Leaders, and we are so proud to serve you and your fellow students.

Warmly,

Anya Yeager

Executive Director, Williamsburg Academy
